Happenings at the Hop
The Hopkins Center for the Arts, otherwise known as the Hop, has been the beating heart of Dartmouth's creative spaces. It is home to everything from student performances and film screenings to Courtyard Cafe and the Hood Museum of Art. In short, the Hop is where the arts come alive on campus. For the past few years, the main Hop has been closed due to a major renovation. Since my first year at Dartmouth, I've only been able to see a version of the Hop shielded by scaffolding. I would hear stories of what the Hop was like from my '25 and '26 friends, who were around and had actually been able to venture the Hop before the renovations began. I always wondered when I would be able to step in it for the first time…and that was this weekend!
The Hop celebrated its grand re-opening this past weekend, and wow, the newly renovated building is stunning! There were new practice spaces for performance groups, full stages for theatre productions, and a new jewelry studio, just to name a few.
To mark this momentous occasion, the Hop hosted a variety of events while bringing in various alumni. There were workshops and fireside chats with famous alumni like Mindy Kaling, Shonda Rimes, Rachel Dratch, Alexei Pappas. Music permeated the air through performances from Hans Williams and Yo-Yo Ma, while the top of the Hop saw performances from student bands and DJs.
One of my favorite moments was a workshop with Angel + Dren, a duo of DJ twins and of course, Dartmouth alumnae. While I can't say I was familiar with them prior to the workshop, I enjoyed hearing about how they taught themselves how to DJ with the help of a friend after graduating, how they made the scary choice of foregoing a career to pursue DJing full-time, and what kind of music they're currently experimenting with.

After years of waiting, stepping inside the Hop and engaging with Dartmouth alumni felt surreal. This weekend marked the start of a new chapter for the arts at Dartmouth, and I can't wait to see what comes next!
