Things to do at Dartmouth: Winter Edition
Baby, it's cold outside! But don't let the cold deter you from having fun on campus. Each season in Hanover is beautiful in its own way, and winter is no exception. While cold temperatures intimidate many, the glistening of the snow on the Green creates a great atmosphere for spending time with family and friends. Here are my favourite winter activities around campus!
- No. 1
Skating on Occom Pond!
Visit the Dartmouth Outing Club at the north end of the pond to rent some skates and spend the afternoon skating with friends. Make sure to check the Outing Club website before you go, to make sure it's safe to skate!
- No. 2
Cross country ski around Hanover
The DOC also oversees 25 kilometers of cross country ski trails in Hanover and the surrounding area. Once again, visit the DOC House at Occom Pond to rent skis and buy a day pass.
- No. 3
Hit the slopes at the Dartmouth Ski-Way!
Steeped in Dartmouth tradition, the Dartmouth Skiway is home to more than 30 national champions. Skiers of all levels can enjoy the Skiway, as lessons are also available. The Skiway is a short 30-min drive from campus and a great way to spend a weekend.
- No. 4
Throw a tennis ball at a Men's Hockey Game!
A tradition that began in the '90s, students pack the stands at Thompson Arena when the men's hockey team plays Princeton and throw tennis balls onto the ice after we score our first goal. Rumours are that a Princeton fan once threw a tennis ball at the Dartmouth goalie, beginning the tradition.

Join in the Winter Carnival Fun
Since 1911, the Dartmouth Winter Carnival has been providing a weekend of fun in the middle of the term. An ice sculpture contest on the Green, a polar plunge in the pond and a plethora of winter sporting events make for an action-packed weekend.
